Competency is assessed through a combination of knowledge refreshment and practical application:

  • Theory Review: Instructor led discussions and knowledge checks to reinforce core safety principles and highlight current industry best practices.
  • Practical Assessment: Direct observation of lifting techniques, team handling, and safe movement of loads in realistic scenarios.

For Who

This is the mandatory starting point for anyone seeking a career in the wind industry, including:

  • Wind Turbine Technicians and Engineers
  • Subcontractors and Site Inspectors
  • Project Managers and Safety Officers requiring turbine access.

PPE Requirements

For the practical training sessions, participants must provide:

  • S3 Safety Boots.
  • Durable workwear (suitable for climbing and mechanical environments.)

Note: Specialist PFPE is provided by Hexis.

Purpose

The GWO Manual Handling module is a core element of the Global Wind Organisation Basic Safety Training. It is designed for individuals working in or seeking access to wind turbine environments, providing the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely plan, assess, and carry out manual handling tasks in both onshore and offshore wind energy operations. The course focuses on reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injury by applying correct lifting techniques, safe movement of loads, and effective use of ergonomic principles in confined turbine environments.

Course Content

This module develops knowledge and practical skills required for safe manual handling in wind turbine environments:

  • Legislation & Standards: Understanding legal requirements and industry safety standards relating to manual handling.
  • Risk Assessment: Identifying hazards and assessing manual handling tasks before work begins.
  • Body Mechanics: Understanding posture, movement, and safe lifting principles to reduce injury risk.
  • Safe Lifting Techniques: Practical training in lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying loads safely.
  • Team Handling: Coordinated lifting and movement of awkward or heavy loads in restricted spaces.
  • Ergonomics in Turbines: Applying safe techniques within confined and challenging wind turbine environments.
  • Practical Scenarios: Realistic exercises simulating manual handling tasks commonly encountered on site.

Course Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded the GWO Manual Handling certificate. All results are uploaded to GWO WINDA and are valid for 24 months.

Prerequisites

  • A high level of physical fitness and a “Fit for Work" health declaration that is completed on arrival.
  • A valid form of photographic identification on the day of training.
  • A minimum age of 18 years.
