Course Assessments

Competency is assessed through a combination of knowledge and practical application:

  • Theory Review: Instructor-led discussions and knowledge checks to reinforce inspection and maintenance principles and current industry best practices.
  • Practical Assessment: Direct observation of inspection and maintenance skills, including fault identification, functional testing, and basic servicing of service lift systems.

This course is intended for personnel who are responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and ensuring the safe operation of service lift systems within wind turbine environments. It is aimed at those involved in equipment reliability, compliance, and ongoing maintenance, including:

  • Wind Turbine Maintenance Technicians
  • Service Lift Inspectors
  • Maintenance and Reliability Personnel
  • Subcontractors responsible for lift inspection and upkeep

PPE Requirements

For the practical training sessions, participants must provide:

  • S3 Safety Boots.
  • Durable workwear (suitable for climbing and mechanical environments.)

Note: Specialist PFPE is provided by Hexis.

Purpose

The GWO Service Lift Inspection & Maintenance module is designed for personnel working in wind turbine environments who are responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and ensuring the safe operation of service lift systems. The course provides the essential knowledge and practical skills required to carry out inspections, identify faults, and perform basic maintenance to ensure service lifts remain safe, compliant, and operational in both onshore and offshore wind energy environments.

Course Content

This module develops the knowledge and practical skills required to inspect and maintain service lift systems in wind turbine environments:

  • Legislation & Standards: Understanding legal requirements and industry standards for service lift inspection and maintenance.
  • Lift Components: Identification of key mechanical and electrical service lift systems and safety devices.
  • Pre-Use and Routine Inspection: Carrying out visual and functional inspections of service lift systems.
  • Maintenance Principles: Basic servicing, cleaning, lubrication, and upkeep of lift systems.
  • Fault Identification: Recognising wear, damage, and system faults affecting safe operation.
  • Safety Systems: Understanding and checking safety features such as overspeed governors and fall arrest systems.
  • Emergency Systems: Verifying correct function of emergency descent and evacuation systems.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Recording inspection findings and reporting defects correctly.
  • Practical Maintenance: Hands-on inspection and basic maintenance of service lift systems.

Course Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded the GWO Service Lift Inspection & Maintenance certificate. All results are uploaded to GWO WINDA.

Prerequisites

  • A valid (non-expired) GWO Lift User certificate.
  • A high level of physical fitness and a “Fit for Work" health declaration that is completed on arrival.
  • A valid form of photographic identification on the day of training.
  • A minimum age of 18 years.
  • A valid GWO WINDA ID.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in English.
