Purpose

The GWO Enhanced First Aid Refresher  (EFAR) module is designed for personnel working in the wind industry who may be required to provide advanced first aid in remote or challenging environments. Building upon fundamental first aid principles, the course develops the knowledge and practical skills required to assess, stabilise, and manage serious injuries and medical emergencies until professional medical assistance becomes available. Particular emphasis is placed on trauma management, patient care, and decision-making in offshore and remote wind turbine environments.

Course Content

This module refreshes and reinforces the knowledge and practical skills required to manage medical emergencies in wind turbine environments, covering both fundamental first aid principles and advanced emergency care techniques:

  • Basic First Aid Principles: Refreshing casualty assessment, primary survey, and immediate life-saving interventions.
  • Patient Assessment: Reinforcing structured and detailed casualty assessment using recognised emergency care principles.
  • Airway & Breathing Management: Refreshing recognition of airway obstruction and breathing difficulties, and practising techniques such as recovery position, airway opening manoeuvres, oxygen administration, and the use of i-gel airway devices to maintain a clear airway.
  • Circulation & Shock: Reinforcing identification and treatment of shock, severe bleeding, and circulatory compromise.
  • Trauma Management: Refreshing assessment and management of fractures, spinal injuries, crush injuries, burns, and major trauma.
  • Medical Emergencies: Reviewing recognition and response to serious medical conditions and illnesses.
  • Remote Patient Care: Reinforcing ongoing casualty management in remote and offshore environments.
  • Incident Management: Refreshing communication, handover procedures, and coordination with emergency services.
  • Practical Scenarios: Repeating realistic emergency response exercises based on wind industry incidents.
