Course Assessments

Competency is assessed through a combination of knowledge and practical application:

  • Theory Review: Instructor-led discussions and knowledge checks to reinforce inspection and maintenance principles and current industry best practices.
  • Practical Assessment: Direct observation of inspection and maintenance skills, including identification of faults, completion of inspection checks, and basic servicing of crane and hoist systems.

This course is intended for personnel who are required to inspect, maintain, and verify the safe operation of crane and hoist systems within wind turbine environments. It is designed for those responsible for ensuring lifting equipment remains safe, compliant, and operational, including:

  • Wind Turbine Maintenance Technicians
  • Crane and Hoist Inspectors
  • Maintenance and Reliability Personnel
  • Subcontractors responsible for lifting equipment inspection and upkeep

PPE Requirements

For the practical training sessions, participants must provide:

  • S3 Safety Boots.
  • Durable workwear (suitable for climbing and mechanical environments.)

Note: Specialist PFPE and High-Visibility Vest is provided by Hexis.

Purpose

The GWO Crane & Hoist Inspection & Maintenance module is designed for personnel working in wind turbine environments who are required to inspect, maintain, and carry out basic servicing of crane and hoist systems. The course provides the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to ensure lifting equipment remains safe, compliant, and fully operational in both onshore and offshore wind energy environments.

Course Content

This module develops the knowledge and practical skills required to inspect and maintain crane and hoist systems in wind turbine environments:

  • Legislation & Standards: Understanding legal requirements and industry standards for lifting equipment inspection and maintenance.
  • Crane & Hoist Components: Identification of key mechanical and electrical components within crane and hoist systems.
  • Inspection Procedures: Carrying out routine visual and functional inspections of lifting equipment.
  • Maintenance Principles: Basic servicing, cleaning, lubrication, and care of crane and hoist systems.
  • Fault Identification: Recognising wear, damage, and system faults affecting safe operation.
  • Safety Controls: Applying lockout/tagout awareness and safe isolation principles during maintenance.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Recording inspection findings and reporting defects correctly.
  • Practical Maintenance: Hands-on inspection and basic maintenance of crane and hoist systems.

Course Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded the GWO Crane & Hoist Inspection & Maintenance certificate. All results are uploaded to GWO WINDA and are valid for 36 months.

Prerequisites

  • A valid (non-expired) GWO GWO Crane User module certificate.
  • A high level of physical fitness and a “Fit for Work" health declaration that is completed on arrival.
  • A valid form of photographic identification on the day of training.
  • A minimum age of 18 years.
  • A valid GWO WINDA ID.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in English.
