GWO Advanced Rescue Training

GWO Working at Height and Manual Handling REQUIRED

Course Assessments

Competency is assessed through a combination of knowledge and practical application:

  • Theory Review: Instructor-led discussions and knowledge checks to reinforce rescue principles and current industry best practices.
  • Practical Assessment: Direct observation of advanced rescue techniques, including casualty recovery from nacelle, hub, spinner, and tower environments using appropriate rescue systems.

For Who

This module is designed for personnel who are required to carry out advanced rescue duties within wind turbine environments, including:

  • Wind Turbine Technicians and Engineers
  • Team Leaders and Supervisors
  • Maintenance and Service Personnel
  • Subcontractors and Site Inspectors requiring turbine access

PPE Requirements

For the practical training sessions, participants must provide:

  • S3 Safety Boots.
  • Durable workwear (suitable for climbing and mechanical environments.)

Note: Specialist PFPE is provided by Hexis.

Purpose

The GWO Advanced Rescue Training (ART) module is designed for personnel working in wind turbine environments who may be required to perform or assist in rescue operations at height. The course develops advanced knowledge and practical skills required to plan, prepare for, and conduct safe, efficient, and coordinated rescues from multiple locations within a wind turbine, ensuring personnel are competent to carry out rescue operations in both onshore and offshore wind energy environments.

Course Content

This module develops the advanced knowledge and practical skills required to perform rescue operations in wind turbine environments:

  • Rescue Planning: Understanding risk assessment, roles, and responsibilities during rescue operations.
  • Rescue Equipment: Selection, inspection, and correct use of advanced rescue systems and devices.
  • Hub, Spinner & Nacelle Rescue: Techniques for recovering casualties from complex turbine locations.
  • Tower & Basement Rescue: Safe evacuation procedures from vertical and confined spaces.
  • Single Rescue & Team Rescue: Coordinated rescue techniques using individual and team-based systems.
  • Lowering & Raising Systems: Practical use of rescue kits for controlled casualty movement.
  • Casualty Handling: Safe movement and management of an injured or unconscious person during rescue.
  • Emergency Scenarios: Realistic turbine-based rescue exercises under time and environmental constraints.

Course Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded the GWO Advanced Rescue Training certificate. All results are uploaded to GWO WINDA and are valid for 24 months.
